AI source citations should be checked as evidence for specific statements, rather than treated as a decorative list of links. A delivery document does not automatically prove that delivery is free, available in a particular country or completed within a stated time. You can perform this review without knowing the model's internals: you need the answer and the full cited documents. The result is a list of supported claims, claims needing narrower wording and claims without evidence.
Separate the answer into individual claims
A claim is a piece of information you can check independently of the answer's style. “The package includes a consultation, costs £200 and is available tomorrow” contains three different facts. Record them separately because one document might support the scope without confirming the current price or availability. A very short answer does not need an elaborate spreadsheet; three rows are enough if they preserve the wording, evidence and conditions without silently simplifying their meaning.
Do not classify a polite opening as a business claim. “I am happy to help” needs no reference article, whereas “you can change every booking without a fee” does. Separate an operation the system performed from an explanation of what is possible: “I changed the appointment” requires confirmation of the operation, not a citation from an FAQ. General draft assessment belongs to Copilot suggestion quality; this task concerns the relationship between one sentence and its evidence.
Preserve negatives, exceptions and time qualifications. “Does not include”, “usually” and “for new accounts” alter meaning, although they are easy to lose when shortening an answer. Do not improve the wording immediately, because that would mean reviewing your own version instead of the AI proposal. Mark the issue first, prepare the correction afterwards and check the revised claim again so that the reason for the operator's decision stays visible.
Open the relevant passage rather than a matching document
Evidence should point to a passage containing the information the answer communicates. Open the full source and read its heading and the paragraphs before and after the citation. A condition of applicability may sit immediately beside the excerpt used in the answer. A file name, page address or matching keyword is not enough: a document called “Bookings” may describe only one kind of offer while the answer presents a rule for every offer.
Check the product, website and customer group covered by the material. An administrator's instruction does not show that a visitor can perform the same action independently. Conditions for one country do not automatically carry over to another.
Where the document has several sections, record the name of the relevant one instead of citing the entire document as a single uniform rule; this makes it easier to return to the precise condition during later correction.
Meetlead private tests can show citations from the sources used, giving you a starting point for manual comparison. That does not promise public citations in the visitor conversation or automatic assessment of every sentence. Reference preparation is covered by a knowledge base for a chatbot. Here you are checking the source already cited, rather than adding documents merely to make the source list look more substantial or improve an unrelated corpus metric.
Compare the subject, conditions, timing and scope
Matching vocabulary is insufficient: the source must support the same relationship between the relevant things. For a price claim, check the item, tax treatment and required option. For a deadline, check the starting point, business days and words that limit certainty.
For a permission, compare the person's role. This reveals statements that resemble the source but introduce a new unsupported rule affecting what the customer can do or expect from the service.
Scroll the table sideways to see all columns.
| Claim | Source text | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Every offer can be cancelled a day before | Offer A: cancellation until 24 hours before | Too broad: other offers are not covered |
| The deadline is two business days | Fulfilment usually takes two business days | The qualification usually was omitted |
| The price includes delivery | Delivery is charged separately | Contradiction requiring correction |
The table uses fictional examples to demonstrate comparison, not the terms of a real service. Its first row contains a valid fact for offer A without proving the same rule for the whole company. The second needs “usually” restored; the third needs the information changed. A useful review ends with an editorial decision: narrow the option, reinstate a condition or remove a statement that cannot be defended using the cited material available to you.
Review combinations of documents separately. “Package A contains a consultation” and “Service B is available tomorrow” do not establish that package A's consultation is available tomorrow. Find evidence for the connection or leave the date unconfirmed. For several requests, separating multiple questions in one message helps organise the answer, but several correct parts do not compensate for one false inference that changes the customer's choice or introduces an unsupported commitment.
Distinguish support for a sentence from proof of source use
Manual review establishes whether a document supports a statement; it does not independently reveal how the model chose that statement. “Is this fact documented?” and “Was this document the basis of generation?” are different questions. An answer may happen to agree with the source while a citation was attached later. Do not claim you audited the model's mechanism if you only compared the text visible to an operator with a reference document.
Use clear review outcomes: supported, needs a condition, contradictory or no evidence. Add a brief reason, such as “the document concerns administrators but the answer concerns visitors”. Do not replace that explanation with a confidence percentage invented by a reviewer. When the citation is incomplete, specify the missing passage needed for a decision; inability to open the full document limits the review rather than confirming correctness or automatically proving the answer wrong.
Meet AI sources and private proposals support this work with the required plan, permissions and active application. Compare the text with the citation, then insert the corrected draft after the operator decides it is usable. Deliberate approval of an AI reply remains a separate step: neither a link nor a successful private test instructs the system to send content to a customer without the operator reading it first.
Wallat and colleagues distinguish citation correctness from attribution faithfulness: whether the generation actually relied on the source. Reading a document cannot by itself establish the latter: Correctness is not Faithfulness in RAG Attributions.
Correct the statement while preserving its documented meaning
A correction should remove the difference between the claim and source rather than just soften its tone. If the document concerns offer A, write “For offer A”; if a deadline is indicative, keep that qualification. A complete example is: “For offer A, cancellation is available until 24 hours before the start. I do not have confirmed conditions for the other offers; please give the selected service name.” The customer can distinguish the established fact from what remains unknown.
Check the revision for new claims. “Give me the service name and I will cancel it immediately” adds a promise of execution unsupported by an informational document. Do not replace one undocumented rule with another promise merely to end on a friendly note. A good answer can leave part of the task open when it explains the information needed to resolve it and does not present a knowledge limit as unwillingness to help the customer.
Keep the table with the review date and the option to which the decision applies. Exclude customer data, and do not copy the entire conversation history if the checked sentence is sufficient. A later source change calls for another look at the current passage. Treat an earlier supported verdict as a decision about a particular text and scope, not a permanent certificate covering every similar answer generated afterwards using changed documents or different customer conditions.
Questions about reviewing AI citations
Does a working link mean the answer is correct? No: it only establishes that the material is available. Check whether the passage supports the same statement for the same option, person and conditions.
A document on the right subject may omit the required fact or describe an exception. Decide at sentence level rather than approving an entire answer on the strength of its list of addresses.
Does every part need a separate citation? A polite opening and every word of an instruction do not need separate links. Facts affecting cost, timing, permissions or a customer's decision do need a way to verify them. One passage can support several claims if it actually covers all of them; do not extend its scope to information it does not contain.
