Click to message ads do not send people to a landing page. They open a conversation with your business in Messenger or Instagram Direct, so customer service is the first thing the prospect experiences. One tap and one message put the person straight into your team's inbox. That is convenient for the customer and risky for you, because everything the landing page used to do now rests on the first reply.

This guide does not cover campaign settings, budgets or creatives. It covers the handoff from the ad to a person: what question the campaign asks, who replies, how to tell a real enquiry from curiosity within a few messages and how to measure the outcome. If your campaign sends people to a website rather than a conversation, start with the guide on what to do when paid traffic is not converting.

What happens after someone taps a click-to-message ad

After tapping the button, the customer lands in a conversation with your Facebook Page or Instagram account. Before typing anything, they see a greeting and a few ready-made questions that you set up in the ad. Picking a ready-made question takes one tap, so the first message in your inbox is often a line your business wrote, not the customer's own words. That tells the agent where the conversation started, but not yet what the customer actually needs.

Meta's documentation says that ads that click to Messenger take people directly into a conversation with the business and that the greeting and starter questions can be customised. The source says nothing about how many of these conversations turn into sales. Meta for Developers: Ads that Click to Messenger.

The second consequence is less obvious. A customer arriving from an ad lacks the context a website normally provides: pricing, scope of service, terms. They may have written because it was easy, not necessarily because they are ready to buy. General rules for running these channels, including connecting the accounts, are in our guide to customer service on Facebook and Instagram.

A campaign question that shows where the customer came from

Meta can pass information about the originating ad to an app, but only when the tool subscribes to the right events and stores them. Do not assume your inbox will show the campaign name next to the conversation. Test it with a message before launch. Meetlead does not currently display this information on Messenger or Instagram conversations, so the source has to be identified another way.

According to the Messenger webhook documentation, ad data such as the ad ID reaches the app when it is subscribed to the messages and messaging_referrals fields. The source describes the data format, not whether a particular tool displays it. Meta for Developers: Messages webhook.

The simplest method is to write separate starter questions for each campaign. If the air-conditioning service ad offers "How much is an AC service?" and the installation ad offers "Do you install in apartment blocks?", the agent knows straight away which offer is in play. The table below shows this for a fictional installation company.

Scroll the table sideways to see all columns.

The conversation owner and the 24-hour window

A campaign produces messages whenever the ads run, not when your team is at work. Before launch, name the person or department that takes conversations from each campaign, plus a stand-in for absences. Also decide whether the ad should run when nobody can reply. A reply after two days is not just weak; in Meta channels it may not be possible at all.

The Messenger Platform policy lists a conversation started after a click-to-Messenger ad as one of the events that opens the standard 24-hour reply window; sending outside it requires the exceptions described in the policy. The source does not say how quickly customers expect a reply. Meta for Developers: Messenger Platform policy.

In the Meetlead customer service inbox, Messenger and Instagram Direct messages arrive alongside your website chat. You can assign a conversation to a person or department, and the inbox shows how long the first message has been waiting for a reply. Meetlead sends Messenger replies only within the standard 24-hour window. It does not create or manage ad campaigns; you set those up in Meta's advertising tools.

Qualifying in three messages

Without a form, qualification happens inside the conversation. A customer who picked a ready-made question expects an answer to it, not a list of counter-questions. So lead with something concrete and ask follow-ups afterwards. How to choose questions that do not screen out good customers is covered in our guide to qualifying leads on your website.

  1. Answer the question from the ad.Give the price range, rule or condition the customer asked about. If the price depends on details, say which details instead of dodging the question.
  2. Ask one deciding question.Pick the piece of information that changes your next step: location, timing or scope. One question per message, not three.
  3. Offer a specific next step.A site visit, a quote, a phone call or a link to the service description. The customer should know what happens next and when.
  4. Record the outcome.Add a tag and a short internal note: enquiry, information request, out of scope. Without it you cannot count what the campaign delivered.

If the customer stops replying, do not send a string of reminders. One message with a concrete offer, sent while you can still write, is enough. Closing sales conversations like this on Instagram is covered in a separate guide on follow-ups in Instagram DMs.

Templates for the first reply

The first reply to a message from an ad should be ready before the campaign starts, one for each starter question. Then the agent does not have to write from scratch, and the customer gets the same quality whoever is on shift. Adapt the template to the conversation before you send it. In Meetlead you can save it as a private or team macro; how to write such texts is covered in our guide to reply templates.

Template for a price question

"Hi, servicing one unit costs between 60 and 85 euros, depending on access to the outdoor unit. How many units do you have and where are you based? Then I can give you an exact price and the next free slot." (fictional company, sample prices)

For "I have another question" the template is simpler: thank them, ask them to describe the request in one sentence and say when you will realistically reply if it takes longer. A customer coming from an ad often messages several businesses at once, so "Thanks, we will get back to you soon" with no substance loses to a competitor who gave a price range straight away.

Measurement: a conversation is not yet an enquiry

The ad platform shows how many conversations a campaign started. Someone who tapped a ready-made question and never answered your reply counts the same in that figure as a customer who booked a site visit. So count separately: conversations started, conversations where the customer replied after your first message, and conversations tagged as a real enquiry. Only the last number tells you whether the campaign creates work for your sales team.

  • Each campaign has its own starter question or its own tag added with the first reply
  • The outcome tag has at most four values and everyone on the team reads them the same way
  • Conversations where the customer never replied are counted separately, not as lost enquiries
  • Time to first reply is checked against the hours the ad runs, not just office hours
  • Once a week someone reads a few conversations from each campaign and notes recurring questions

Tags have to stay simple, or after a month everyone uses them differently and the report stops meaning anything. How to build categories that hold up over time is covered in our guide to tagging conversations and tickets. Recurring questions are also material for improving the ad itself: if half your customers ask the same thing, put the answer in the creative or the greeting.

Questions about click-to-message ads

Is a click-to-message ad better than an ad that links to a website? It depends on the offer. A conversation works well when the customer has to ask about details anyway, for example to get a quote for a service. Compare the number of real enquiries and the time your team spent handling them, not the number of conversations.

Can I leave replies to ad messages to an automated assistant? You set the greeting and starter questions in the ad, but the actual reply usually needs human judgement. In Meetlead, the Meet AI assistant answers only in the website widget, and its replies are not sent automatically to Messenger or Instagram.
